Alex Soros, the son of billionaire philanthropist George Soros, has not withdrawn his support for President Joe Biden despite growing calls for the latter to step down from the 2024 presidential race.
The disastrous CNN presidential debate performance of the 81-year-old Biden on June 27 left the Democratic Party divided, with an increasing number of high-profile members, including several members of Congress, urging Biden to step aside from the race.
Since then, Democratic Party members and megadonors have argued that another candidate, such as Vice President Kamala Harris, might be better suited to challenge former President Donald Trump. (Related: Two more Democrat megadonors confirm they are no longer supporting Biden’s presidential campaign.)
“Trump is an existential threat to American democracy; it is our duty to put forward the strongest candidate against him. Joe Biden is a patriot but is no longer the best candidate to defeat Trump. For the good of our country, I am asking Joe Biden to step aside – to deliver on his promise to be a bridge to a new generation of leaders,” Rep. Pat Ryan, a New York Democrat representing a competitive congressional district, wrote on X, formerly Twitter. Ryan is the latest of those who believe Biden should withdraw.
But Alex Soros has taken a different course among other Democratic supporters.
Instead of criticizing Biden for stumbling through several answers and occasionally losing his train of thought during the debate, Alex Soros, the chair of Open Society Foundations (OSF), called for unity within the Democratic Party on X.
“Let’s stop running against ourselves and run against the existential threat that is Donald Trump! Biden-Harris 2024!” he posted on July 11.
But despite Soros’s call, he cannot change the fact that a growing number of Hollywood elites and high-profile personalities want a new Democratic nominee.
A few days ago, actor and influential Democratic supporter George Clooney publicly called for the Democratic Party to select a new nominee in his op-ed article for the New York Times. Clooney, fresh from co-hosting a star-studded fundraiser for Biden, expressed his deep respect and admiration for the president but stressed that time has taken its toll.
“I love Joe Biden. As a senator. As a vice president and as president. I consider him a friend, and I believe in him. Believe in his character. Believe in his morals. In the last four years, he’s won many of the battles he’s faced. But the one battle he cannot win is the fight against time. None of us can,” Clooney wrote. “It’s devastating to say it, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fundraiser was not the Joe big F-ing deal Biden of 2010. He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate.”
And it is not just Clooney.
The actor’s call followed similar appeals from prominent figures like actor Rob Reiner and author Stephen King earlier this July, who despite their prior vocal support, have expressed similar concerns. Other high-profile personalities have also joined the chorus.
